Full-Coverage Outdoor Living, Custom-Built for Your Home

A canopy or patio cover turns an exposed outdoor space into a room: full protection from sun and rain, a place your patio furniture can live year-round, a space you can use even when the weather isn’t cooperating. Every project is built specifically for the space it’s going on, engineered for Chicago weather, and installed by our own team. Permanent structures built to last for decades, with select components sourced from trusted partners when the project calls for it.

Types of Canopies and Patio Covers We Build

Fabric Patio Covers

A softer look with dozens of fabric and color combinations. Permanent canvas covers for year-round use or seasonal covers that come down for winter, on custom aluminum frames engineered for your space. Integrated windows and doors available.

Attached vs. Freestanding

Covers can attach to your home's wall and roofline as a covered extension, or stand free in the yard. We help you figure out which fits your space during your consultation.

Entrance Canopies

Custom canopies over front, side, or back entries. Protects guests from rain and snow, keeps your entryway clean, and adds a finished architectural detail. Fabric, aluminum, or standing seam metal.

Backyard and Specialty Canopies

Targeted coverage for hot tubs, grilling stations, outdoor kitchens, or wherever you need it. If your space doesn't fit a standard category, we build custom.

Why Chicagoland Homeowners Choose Chesterfield

A patio cover is closer to a small building than a shade product: structural engineering, load calculations, snow and wind considerations, integration with your existing home, and permit-worthy documentation. Chesterfield does all of it in-house, and we’ve been doing it since 1958.

  • Structural engineering in every design, calibrated for Chicago snow and wind loads
  • Full manufacturing under one roof in South Holland, with select components from trusted partners
  • Custom span capabilities for large or irregular spaces
  • Attached and freestanding builds, including complex tie-ins to existing rooflines
  • Our own crews handle installation, never subcontractors
  • Deep experience with Chicago-area permitting and HOA architectural review

Commercial Canopies for Storefronts, Hotels, Hospitals, and More

Canopies are one of our largest commercial categories: hotel entrance canopies, hospital drop-off canopies, retail storefront canopies, and restaurant patio covers that turn outdoor dining into year-round revenue. The engineering scales up; the manufacturing is the same team, facility, and standards, with custom branding and graphics available. If you can dream it, we can build it.

Materials, Finishes, and Design Options

Once you’ve chosen the type of structure, the design decisions begin. Chesterfield offers a wide range of options so your patio cover or canopy fits your home and your taste.

  • Aluminum and composite framing options
  • Factory-applied finishes in a range of standard colors, with custom color matching available
  • Wood-look finishes on aluminum for a warmer aesthetic without ongoing maintenance
  • Solid roof, corrugated, or flat panel roofing options
  • Dozens of fabric colors, patterns, and textures for fabric-covered structures
  • Custom architectural profiles including gable, hip, shed, and flat configurations
  • Coordinated column and support styles that complement your home
  • Structures designed to accommodate future lighting, fans, or heating additions your electrician can install

We bring samples and finish books to every consultation so you can see and feel the materials against your home before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a canopy and a patio cover?

There’s overlap between the two, but generally: a patio cover is a full-coverage roof structure over a patio, deck, or specific outdoor space. A canopy is often a more targeted cover over an entrance, walkway, hot tub, or specific area. Some structures blur the line, and we help you figure out which term and configuration fits your project best during your consultation.
A lot of the time, yes. Attached patio covers, freestanding structures over a certain size, and permanent canopies all typically require municipal permits. Larger structures may also require structural engineering documentation. HOA approval is separately required in many communities. We manage the municipal permit process directly. For HOA submissions, we prepare all the documentation your board needs and you handle the submission with our support.
In most cases, yes. Attached patio covers tie into your home’s exterior wall and roofline, creating a covered extension of your living space. We evaluate your home’s structural conditions, the roofline configuration, and the attachment feasibility during the design phase. If attachment isn’t practical or isn’t what you want, freestanding options are also available.
For most homeowners, aluminum is the top choice. It delivers years of durability, requires virtually no maintenance, resists rot and rust, and holds finish color for years. Fabric patio covers offer more visual warmth and a wider design range, and can be built as either permanent canvas covers or seasonal covers depending on how you want to use the space. We walk you through the tradeoffs during your consultation.
Total project time typically runs six to twelve weeks from consultation to installation, depending on material selection, structural complexity, and how quickly permits and HOA approvals move through. Installation itself is usually one to three days once fabrication is complete. Custom or larger projects can take longer.
Yes, depending on the type. Solid aluminum and structural patio covers stay up year-round and hold up to Chicago snow and wind. Fabric covers can be built as permanent canvas covers for year-round use or as seasonal covers designed to come down for winter.
In most cases, yes. We evaluate your deck’s surface, condition, and structural anchoring capacity during the design phase. Most existing decks can accommodate a properly designed cover. Older decks may need reinforcement before installation, which we identify upfront so there are no surprises.
The structure can be designed to accommodate lighting, fans, heaters, or other electrical features you’d like to add. Because we don’t do electrical work ourselves, the actual wiring and installation would be handled by your electrician. We plan the structure to accommodate these additions during the design phase so the layout is clean when your electrician comes in.
An attached patio cover connects to your home’s exterior wall and roofline, seamlessly extending your living space outdoors. A freestanding patio cover is a separate standalone structure that can be placed anywhere in your yard, giving you more flexibility on location and design but no direct connection to the house. Both are permanent structures. We help you decide based on your yard, your goals, and any HOA or setback restrictions.
In most cases, yes. We provide inspection, cleaning, refinishing, structural adjustments, and repair for canopies and patio covers across Chicagoland and the Midwest, regardless of who originally installed them. We do want to inspect the structural integrity before signing on to service ongoing, since we back our work with our own standards.
Aluminum patio covers commonly last 30 years or more with minimal maintenance. Fabric covers on canopies typically run 10 to 15 years before replacement, with the frame lasting significantly longer. Standing seam metal canopies can last 30 to 50 years. Your longevity depends heavily on material choice, and we walk you through what to expect during your consultation.
